- Lake Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve |
In case you want to explore the Biosphere Reserve guided by a professional and local expert, you ought take part in an excursion organised by the office of the Biosphere Reserve. In addition to tours open to the public, excursions for groups can be organised by the "Naturwacht" (nature protection organisation). | |
| Zarrentin - Church - Monastery | We recommend to start this tour near the swimming baths on the southern edge of the lake. Vehicles can be parked nearby on the parking lot on the outskirts of the town. Then simply follow the promenade trail, where you soon get an impression of the beautiful sights expecting you. Now and then, you may have a look at the lanes which lead on the left hand side from the promenade towards the town centre. But first you should go to the church square. The church of Zarrentin, long attached to the monastery, was originally a Romanesque building constructed with stones found on fields. Remains of this ancient building are still preserved in the walls of the chancel. Only the main building of the monastery is still preserved. | |
| Neuenkirchen - Bockstanz - Neuenkirchen | Neuenkirchen can be easily reached from Zarrentin via Lassahn. The place was first mentioned in .... when you approach it, you will, already from a distance, see a massive village church. It stands on a hill, pretty sleepy and apparently deserted. It is as ancient as the village, and marked by old age. From here, a short walk through the locality in northern direction towards Bockstanz is recommended. Following the main road, you will reach a fork in the road, right leads to Rögnitz, and left, past pastures and meadows, to Bockstanz. After about one kilometre, you get to the place which nowadays consists of only two farms, about 2000 years old, and of one more recent building. The farmhouse in Lower German style with its newly thatched roof is of special beauty. But the second farmhouse is also of interest. There, a pottery centre was installed, displaying a wide variety of ceramics, handicrafts and decorative items of all sorts. In earlier times, the trail went further to a locality called "Stintenburger Hütte". But as this trail now leads into meadows and finishes there, we advise you to return to Neuenkirchen. | |
