Water wandering Hansetic City of Demmin and Region |

| In the last Ice Age, a glacier tongue dug a 30-metre deep
valley - the lake 'Kummerower See'. With a width of 11 kilometres, it is one of the great
lakes in Germany, is the fourth largest lake in Mecklenburg - Vorpommern and connects both
parts of our federal state. The eastern shore of the lake is particularly charming. The flat ground moraine rises gradually until it finally forms 37- metre high cliffs. The lake is fed by the Peene River, which functions as a federal waterway as well. It is navigable from the small town of Malchin to the Port of Warnemuende where it flows into the Baltic Sea. On its way there, (98 kilometres), the river falls only 28 centimetres. When the wind blows strongly from the north or the east, the current pushes the water back, contrary to its flow, into the lake. Alongside the Peene River stretches the largest unified low moorland of the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which is still largely unspoiled. To make better use of the scenic lake and its lifeline, the Peene River, for tourist purposes, a number of resting sites for water wanderers have been established. These can be found in the Hanseatic town of Demmin, Alt Plestlin, Trittelwitz, Verchen/Aalbude, Gravelotte, Sommersdorf, Kummerow, Neukalen, Salem, Moorbauer and in Malchin. From the harbour of Demmin, you may go on a cruise, provided by local shipping companies, to enjoy the beautiful landscape of the impressive nature reserve.
