St. Nikolai cathedral A massive brick construction with elements of Gothic and Baroque styling. The 98 m. high tower (nicknamed "slender Nikolaus") is a landmark in the city. The three churches in the city were first mentioned in 1280 together with their inaugural names in the records.

St. Marien Church The church has three naves and no choir. It was built towards the end of the 14th. century and ultimately decorated. The original painting was restored between 1977 and 1984. The Renaissance pulpit dating from the 16th. century is worth seeing as are the headstones and epitaphs dating from the 14.- 18th. century and a side relief in the St Annes Chapel.

St. Jakobi Church The Jakobi Church was built in two phases. A choirless vaulted church with two naves was built first in 1250. The choir and the principal nave were added in the 14th. century. It has a Roman font, gravestones and well preserved Gothic wall art.

City Museum The museum houses exhibitions of the history of the city and the lives and work of Ernst Moritz Arndt and Caspar-David Friedrich. There are also sketches and paintings by C. D. Friedrich including the picture "Ruine im Riesengebirge".

The city centre is characterised by an assortment of fine private houses and university buildings. The late Baroque assembly hall on the Rubenowplatz is also well worth visiting.
Punkt Gable houses and warehouses In the course of a walk round the city you can see many gable houses in Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque style, as well as old warehouses.
Punkt Stift St. Spiritus The courtyard with its old leaning houses is especially charming.

Otto-Lilienthal-Museum
Offers an interesting glimpse into the life and work
of the aviation pioneer Lilienthal and the history of aviation.
There are flying machines, models, designs and sketches and interactive exhibits for visitors. Children can play with toys designed by the Lilienthal brothers and there is an aerodynamics laboratory with experimental facilities for school groups and students.

Fischerdorf Wieck Lovers of old half timbered and captain’s houses must visit the Fischerdorf Wieck.
Wieck is also well known for its swing bridge over the Ryck. The wooden bridge was built on the Dutch model in 1886 and is still fully functional.

German Museum of Marine Life and Fisheries
Unique in central Europe and the most visited museum in the whole of North Germany.
The well laid out exhibition features marine biology, marine studies, deep sea fishery, man and the sea and flora and fauna of the Baltic Coast.
The marine aquarium is a big attraction. It features indigenous flora and fauna and the largest pool houses a community of sharks.
