Old Town Market | The square Marketplace is surrounded by a variety of old buildings; the Town Hall with its "golden knight", symbolizing Henry the Lion, the founder of the city, restored residences and the pillar house all bear witness to the civic history of Schwerin. The pillar house has a collection of exhibits which mirror the history of life in the city. The Schlachtermarkt can be reached through the arch to the side of the Town Hall. | |

Schlachtermarkt | There is a fountain with a statue of an ox in the market square and several well restored half timbered gables. The carillon is finely worked in Meissen porcelain. | |

Schwerin Cathedral | ||

The cathedral is a prominent landmark. It has a 117 m. high steeple and is one of the finest examples of German Gothic style brickwork. It is quite an experience to climb the tower and there is a wonderful view from above over lake Schwerin. | ||

Schwerin Chateau is surrounded by
water and is almost fairy-tale in appearance with its many turrets and
battlements. This former residential chateau is one of the most

Chateau and Castle Gardens | ||

The
Castle Garden, with its rare trees and plants, encloses the chateau
on three sides. The Baroque style Chateau Gardens with their cruciform canal and an avenue of lime trees make for a restful and pleasant stroll. The pavilion houses a cafe and bar. |

State Museum The museum is situated on Alter Garten and houses several interesting collections. The collection of old masters from the 16th to the 18th century rates among the best in the world. The most unique and notable collection is that of the 17th. century Dutch and Flemish school which is the most comprehensive in Germany. It includes works from the most prominent painters from each époque, such as Rembrandt, Rubens, Hals, Bruegel etc. There is also an extensive collection of paintings and drawings by the French artist J.B.Oudry, court artist to Ludwig XV. The museum also boasts, next to Dresden, the largest collection of Meissen porcelain and a coin and engravings cabinet, both worth seeing. |

Mecklenburg State Theatre The theatre, another landmark building, is next to the Regional Museum on Alter Garten, opposite the Schwerin Chateau. The building was completed between 1883 and 1886 in a mixture of Neo Renaissance and Neo Baroque styles. The Hamburger Conrad Ekhof (1720-1778) founded the first acting academy in Germany there in 1753. The theatre program includes opera, concerts, ballet, plays and Low German theatre. Visitors often admire the interior decor of the building. |

Schelfstadt | The historic quarter around the St. Nikolai baroque church, with its many half timbered houses and the Schelf-, Schweine- and Ziegenmarkt, is currently undergoing restoration. | |

Pfaffenteich A stroll round the Pfaffenteich is also interesting. The shallow artificial lake is surrounded by a variety of well preserved old buildings. A little cruise on the Pfaffenteich ferry "Petermaennchen", is a great experience for children. The panorama view of the old town from the north end of the Pfaffenteich is especially photogenic. |

History Museum | The
Heritage Museum is situated in a carefully restored half timbered house
on "Grosser Moor" (House No. 38). Visitors can learn a great deal there about the customs and lifestyle of the citizens of old Schwerin and its civic culture. |

Water Mill | ||
| The water mill belongs to the Heritage Museum and lies near the Chateau gardens. It is at present the only functioning mill of its kind in Germany and visitors can learn how a rock turns into a granite pedestal of a monument. | |||

|
Schwerin Historic Down Town Chateau, theatre, and museum are easy to reach on foot. And sometimes, two very unusual "residents" of Schwerin will join you, "Petermaennchen" the ghost of the chateau and the guard "Schweriner Nachtwaechter". |

Outdoor Museum Muess | ||

The
outdoor museum is right on Lake Schwerin and houses interesting exhibits
from past centuries, such as a Low German hall with a barn dating from
the 17th. century, an 18th. century village smithy, a herder’s hut, a
village school, a wash house, a herb garden and various agricultural
implements. There is a charming walk to the museum from the Schwerin Chateau over the Zippendorf beach along Lake Schwerin. |

Kaninchenwerder
Island and Ziegelwerder Island |
Lying
in the inner Lake Schwerin, it can be reached in one of
the cruise boats of the "Weisse
Flotte" (white fleet). The peaceful island is notable for its undisturbed nature and the wonderful view of Schwerin and its surrounding landscape. Landing on the neighboring island of Ziegelwerder is prohibited. In case of an emergency, though, fans of water sports can access the little harbor. |

Schweriner Seenlandschaft | ||

There are a few interesting castles in Wiligrad, Klein Trebbow and Plueschow. Because of old churches, museums, and numerous forests and lakes, this area is ideal for tours and day trips on foot, on a bicycle, or by car. | ||
| East Shore of Lake Schwerin | Lake Schwerin is the third largest freshwater lake in Germany. The landscape of the East shore of the Lake is still undisturbed. Not only Lake Schwerin, but the Warnow (the longest river in Mecklenburg), the peat bog Ramper Moor, and the hills Kritzower Berge also predominate this region. | ||
| Nature Reserve "Warnow Valley near Karnin"
with Nature Reserve Station Nature lovers are amazed by the scenery of this 430 ha nature reserve along both sides of the Warnow river. The reserve station Karnin offers educational, guided tours. |

This nature reserve south of Schwerin is almost 20 x 20 kilometers in size. Meadows, woods, carp ponds, and countless water channels represent this mostly manmade landscape. The variety of animals, especially the large number of different birds draw visitors from all over Europe to this region. | ||

Kaarz
Castle and Park are nestled in the middle of a hilly landscape at the edge of the Mecklenburg plain of lakes. The castle is now a hotel. In the 70.000 m² large park, visitors find exotic and protected rare trees, an old fruit tree garden and an idyllic pond. |
