Mecklenburgische Schweiz and Lake Kummerower See
The Nature Park "Mecklenburgische Schweiz and Lake Kummerower See" is situated in the heart of Mecklenburg/West-Pomerania. Its landscape, typical for the region and shaped by the last Ice Age, shows a special variety and numerous peculiarities. Differences of altitude of more than 1000 metres let the landscape seem very varied and reminds of the forms of the hill countries. Embedded by the hills, we find a lot of lakes. Lake Kummerower See and Lake Malchiner See belong to the larger ones in Germany. Its water level is very close to the level of the Baltic Sea.
The Peene, a slowly running meadow river, houses a lot of very rare animals, among them the beaver, in its embankment overgrown with reeds and in the largest area of lower moors in Germany.
