Old Town:

Town fortifications
Ringstrasse
One of the mightiest and almost complete remaining mediaeval defences in Germany. The stone walls date from the 14th. century; they are 2300 metres long and 7,5 metres high. They include keeps, gates and watchtowers and completely surround the city centre.

Keeps
Ringstrasse
Used at first as fortified houses set in the walls as defences. 26 out of a former 56 keeps have now been accurately reconstructed in half timbered style.
City gates
Ringstrasse
The four massive brick gateways are built on stone bases; they are a part of the fortifications and are of great historic importance. They still retain their elegant and ornate facades and have lent their name to the nickname of the "city with four gates".
Friedlaend Gate
north side of the Old Town
The oldest (early 14th. century) and best maintained gate. It was reinforced against artillery in the 16th. century with a mighty half cruciform construction in front, the so called Zwingel. It houses an art study centre nowadays.
New Gate
east side of the Old Town
The youngest of the four, built in the late 15th. century as an afterthought into the city wall. The eight larger than lifesize female terracotta figures in the gable ends on the town side are very eyecatching.
Stargard Gate
south side of the Old Town
Built in the mid 14th. century, it is the tallest (32 m.) of the four. The facade on the town side bears nine figures on the gable ends, the so called "Adorantinnen". The tannery is between the outer and inner gateway.
Treptow Gate
west side of the Old Town
Many people rate this late Gothic (ca. 1400) gateway as the finest of the four with its tower gables and rich, ornate working. It now houses a museum of regional and early prehistory.
