Sights in Wismar

	Market Square	One of the largest (100x100m) and finest squares of its kind in Northern Germany. Surrounded by impressive residences from various eras.
	"Wasserkunst" Am Markt	Built in the late 16th. century by the master builder Brandin in Dutch Renaissance style; it supplied the town with fresh spring water until 1897.
	Alter Schwede Am Markt	The oldest residential house, dating from 1380, in Gothic brick gabled style. It has served as a restaurant since 1878.
	Archidiakonat Marienkirchhof	Restored late Gothic brick building (Pastor house) dating from 1450 near the Market Square.
	Marien church steeple Marienkirchhof	80m high west steeple on the 15th. century church, the latter destroyed in WW2. It is a landmark in Wismar and can be seen from the sea.
	Fuerstenhof Vor dem Amtsgericht	The most northerly Renaissance chateau in Europe, built in the mid 16th. century by Duke J. Albert of Mecklenburg, it served as the ducal city residence.
	St.-Nikolai-Kirche Nikolaikirchhof	Protestant Church of St. Nikolai This late Gothic brick building (inaugurated 1459) is notable for its 37m high middle nave, the third highest in Germany after Cologne and Ulm, its decorative facades and its ornate altars.
	St.-Georgen-Kirche Georgenkirchhof	The Basilica was built with three naves between the 14th. and 15th. centuries. It was seriously damaged in WW2 and rebuilding work was begun in 1990.
	Civic History Museum Schweinsbruecke 8	Schabbellhaus A carefully reconstructed Dutch Renaissance residence dating from (1567-1571). The collection of local and seafaring history is outstanding and there are frequent changes in the exhibitions.

	Isle of Poel	The 37 km² Isle of Poel lies in the Bay of Wismar was officially recognised as a resort in 1997. It can be reached from Wismar over a causeway. Kirchdorf, with its idyllic sports boat and fishing harbour, lies at the centre of the island.
	Dutch windmill Dorf Mecklenburg near Wismar	The pedestal type Dutch windmill, built in1849, stands in the 1000 years old village of Mecklenburg in the near of the Hanseatic town Wismar. The restaurant inside offers a wide variety of regional specialities.
	The Schwerin Chateau	The Schwerin Chateau is surrounded by water and is almost fairy-tale in appearance with its many turrets and battlements. This former residential chateau is one of the most outstanding historic buildings in Germany.
	Schwerin Zoo	Schwerin Zoo The Zoo in Schwerin it houses some 600 creatures of 100 different species. There is a huge water fowl community living in ideal conditions in a central water landscape. There are also exotic species such as zebras, kangaroos, rhinos, big cats, penguins and monkeys and a pets corner for the children.
	Kaarz Castle and Park 19412 Kaarz near Sternberg	Kaarz Castle and Park stand in the middle of a gentle hilly landscape at the edge of the Mecklenburg plain of lakes. The castle is a hotel. In the 70.000 m² large park the visitor can find exotic and rare nature protected trees, an old fruit tree garden and an idyllic pond.
