Stavenhagen is the birthplace of Fritz Reuter.
With its old town hall (now the Fritz Reuter Literature Museum), "Stemhäger
Chateau" and its historic market square it has now become a literary venue. walks
include Ivenack with its 1000 year old oaks.
Also nearby is the hamlet of Scharpzow, where Hoffmann of Fallersleben met Reuter
and encouraged him to write his stories. Reuter lived here and often worked as a volunteer
on the land, like "Strom", in Demzin and with Luise, his later wife, in
the parish house in Rittermannshagen. Reuter later lived in Altentreptow and
worked as a private teacher; he wrote his first book here, the lively story
"Läuschen un Rimels". The Dömitz Fortress in West Mecklenburg was Reuters inspiration, after serving a sentence there for his democratic thinking, for his "Festungstid" book. |
