| Gothic Style Brick
Buildings in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern |
In the latter
half of the 12th. century Gothic brick architecture began to develop in its own
style in North Germany, especially in Mecklenburg and Vorpommern. |
| D-17033 Neubrandenburg | City Gates The four mighty brick built gates with their elegant facades stand on stone bases and are a part of the city fortifications. They are important examples of historic building and lend the city its epithet of the "City with four gates". |
| Friedländ Gate The oldest of the four gates (early 14th. century) and also the best preserved. It was reinforced in the 16th. century with a massive half cruciform bulwark, the so called Zwingel, as a defence against artillery. It houses a centre for art studies nowadays. |
| New Gate The newest of the four, it was let into the city wall as an afterthought in the 15th. century. The eight larger than life terracotta female figures in the gables on the town side are quite eyecatching. |
| Stargard Gate The tallest (32 m), built in the mid 14th. century. The facade on the town side has nine figures in the gable ends, the so called "Adorantinnen". There is a tannery between the inner and outer gateways. |
| Treptow Gate Many consider this wide late Gothic gate (ca. 1400) with its four steeple gables and ornate blind joints to be the finest. It houses a museum of early and prehistory of the region. |
| D-17489 Greifswald | Churches in Greifswald and Eldena Monastery | |
| St. Nikolai Cathedral, St. Marien Church The churches in the Hanseatic City of Greifswald are fine examples of gothic brick construction. |

| D-23966 Wismar | St. Nikolai Church The Church in Wismar is a late Gothic brick built structure ( inaugurated 1459 ) with an impressive 37m high central nave, the largest after Cologne and Ulm and the third highest in Germany. Famous for its ornate facade and altars. |
| D-18209 Bad Doberan | Minster Bad Doberan The Minster in Bad Doberan was completed in 1386, it is an high Gothic brick built structure modelled on the Luebeck church. The interior dates from the 14th. century. The altars (carved winged altar, Corpus Christi altar, novice and millstone altar) and the choir seating are especially interesting. |
| D-17389 Anklam | City Gate The origins of this 32 m. high Gothic brick built gate date from 1250. It was at first only half so high and was built higher in 1450 so that a wooden gangway could be laid in the upper storey. A front gate had to be built on in 1570 as a defence against artillery. All the defences were destroyed in the Seven Years War. Only the stone gate remained intact and served as the town prison after massive cells were built inside. The last execution took place in the yard inside the gate in 1853. It was converted to a museum in 1986. There is a superb view from the top of the 111 steps on the fifth floor over the city and the Peene lowlands. |
| D-19055 Schwerin | Schwerin Cathedral A prominent landmark with its 117 m. high steeple and one of the finest examples of German Gothic brick building. The view from the top of the steeple over the city and Lake Schwerin is breathtaking. |
| D-18055 Rostock | Marien Church The cruciform Gothic basilica is the most notable church in Rostock. The bronze font dates from 1290 and is the finest in the Baltic region. The astronomical clock was installed in the 15th. century and probably came from the workshop of a Nuremberg clockmaker. The mediaeval Rochus altar, the pulpit, the high altar and the seating for the nobility with the organ above it are all worth seeing. |
| D-18439 Stralsund | The Town Hall A Gothic brick building dating from the 13th. century, one of the first of its kind in Stralsund. The ornate facade probably dates from 1370 and was designed by the Swede Nils Eosander. |

It rates as one of the masterpieces of North German Gothic brick building and the main nave at 100 m. long and over 32 m. high is one of the largest on the Baltic coast. |
