Guestrow Chateau
One of the largest remaining preserved Renaissance buildings and one of the most important monuments in the region. The master builders Parr and Brandin gave it its present form in 1558-99. Among its attractions are the reception hall with its stucco friezes, a unique coffer ceiling and the formal gardens.

Ernst Barlach Foundation
Ernst Barlach
(1878-1938), the sculptor and illustrator spent many years of his life in Guestrow. He created many impressive wooden sculptures there.
The Ernst Barlach Memorial is housed in his former studio on the Inselsee as a tribute to the creativity of the great artist.

Heinrich Schliemann Museum
Heinrich Schliemann
(1822-1890), the world famous discoverer of Troy and the royal tombs at Mycenae, spent part of his early life in Ankershagen (Mueritz district). The museum is dedicated to the life and work of the great archaeologist.

Thuenen Museum Tellow
Johann Heinrich von Thuenen (1783-1850) was one of the founders of land management and economic theory. The Thuenen Museum on his former estate in Tellow near Teterow gives visitors from all over the world a glimpse into the work of this model husbandman and agricultural scientist.

State Museum
The museum in the Alten Garten in Schwerin houses several interesting collections.
The collection of old masters from the 16th. to the 18th. centuries ranks among the best in the world.
The extensive collection from the 17th. century Dutch and Flemish school is thought to be the best in Germany. The most important painters from every epoch, such as Rembrandt, Rubens, Hals and Bruegel are represented there.
There is also an unusually comprehensive collection of paintings and sketches by the French artist J.B.Oudry, who was painter to the court of Ludwig XV.
The Meissen porcelain collection is the largest in Germany next to that of Dresden and there is also a notable collection of coins and engravings.

Schwerin Chateau
The fairy tale chateau with its many turrets and castellations is surrounded by water and offers a superb view over the lake. The Ducal living rooms, the Throne Hall, the Beletage with its Silvestergalerie, the Dynastic Gallery and the art gallery with paintings from Mecklenburg (18th. to 20th. century) are just some of the many things of interest there.

Ludwigslust Chateau
The master builder J.J. Busch built in Ludwigslust the Baroque style chateau between 1772 and 1776 as a residence for the Dukes of Mecklenburg.
The "Golden Hall " and reception hall with their papier machè decoration are well worth seeing.

Museum of the Town of Hagenow
The museum is situated in direct vicinity of the town church in the town centre of Hagenow. The ensemble of the museum, classified as a historical monument, includes the impressive half-timbered building built by the distiller and farmer Christian Jessel in the Lange Strasse as well as the two one-storey gutter houses of the hut maker Brandt and of the town hall porter Rick in the Kirchenstrasse.

Open Air Heritage Museum
Visitors here can see an informative exhibition on the agriculture and lifestyle in Mecklenburg. A typical Mecklenburg estate has been laid out with its workers and their cottages and there is a village school dating from around 1910. A Dutch windmill and many other exhibits give an insight into the technical development of agricultural production.

Otto-Lilienthal-Museum
Offers an interesting glimpse into the life and work
of the aviation pioneer Lilienthal and the history of aviation.
There are flying machines, models, designs and sketches and interactive exhibits for visitors. Children can play with toys designed by the Lilienthal brothers and there is an aerodynamics laboratory with experimental facilities for school groups and students.

Doemitz Citadel
The foundations for the citadel were laid in Doemitz in the 13th. century when a castle was built there on the Elbe.
The Italian builder Francesco a Bornau began the work in 1558 and took seven years to complete the mighty pentagonal citadel with its bastions and casemates. It was altered several times over the ensuing centuries and served as a penitentiary in the 18th. and 19th. centuries. Fritz Reuter, the best known of the Low German writers, served out the last year of his detention there in 1839 - 1840. Reuter wrote of his experiences and impressions there in his story "Ut mine Festungstid", published in 1862.

Archaeological Open Air Museum
Portrays the everyday life of the Slavic Obotrites, who settled in the 9th. and 10th. centuries near Gross Raden. Two temple sites, several houses, a smithy, an oven, stables and fortifications have been reconstructed and rebuilt on the uncovered remains of foundations.

A reconstruction of a castle site with courtyard, gardens and city walls in a self contained complex.
The witch’s cellar is a historic rarity in Germany, an underground dungeon from the witch hunting era.

Fritz Reuter Literature Museum
Housed in the former town hall in the market square, altered in 1788. Reuter was born there and it is now the Fritz Reuter Literature Museum. Visitors can see 13 rooms full of collections of manuscripts and handwritten papers by the writer as well as records and documents. There is also a library of Low German literature.

Mueritzeum
The oldest natural history museum in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, founded in 1866. There is an extensive collection of exhibits from the agricultural development and natural history of the Mueritz region. A great attraction for young and old alike is the 25.000 litre cold water aquarium, the largest in Germany.

Hans Fallada
(1893-1947) - world renowned for his novels "Kleiner Mann-was nun?", "Wolf unter Woelfen", "Wer einmal aus dem Blechnapf frisst", "Jeder stirbt fuer sich allein" - lived and worked from 1933 to 1945 in the hamlet of Carwitz near Feldberg.

Mahn- und Gedenkstaetten Woebbelin
Theodor-Koerner-Museum
The writer and freedom fighter Theodor Koerner was buried in 1813 at the age of 22 in Woebbelin. He was mortally wounded in the battle between the Luetzow Free Corps and Napoleon’s troops near Luetzow on 26th. August 1813 (a memorial stone has been laid there). The monument is a reminder of the Luetzow Rangers and the literary works of Theodor Koerner.

KZ-Memorial
In memory of the victims of National Sozialism who died in the "Reiherhorst" concentration camp on the outskirts of Woebbelin. Countless prisoners perished in death marches there in the last few weeks of the war alone.

Windmill Museum
A great deal of interesting exhibits for visitors from the history and development of windmills in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The museum complex boasts 5 well maintained mills.
