The merging of the two towns in 1950 was a special event. Mecklenburg’s Ribnitz and Pomeranian Damgarten’s two communities became one. A bridge over the dividing river Recknitz connects the two parts of the town which were founded in the mid 13th. century but developed quite differently.
The towns enjoyed flourishing economies in the 19th. century, mostly in connection with sail shipping. Schooners were built in numerous shipyards and had their home port here.
Take a look at the principal points of interest in the town, such as the Klarissin Cloister, the late Gothic two storied Rostocker Tor and the
Bernstein (amber) Museum in the former Domina House in the cloister. The excursion to the Open Air Museum at Klockenhagen 5 km. west of the town is also worth making.
