The county town of Grevesmuehlen has some 11.300 residents and is one of the oldest towns in Mecklenburg. It had already reached city status in 1226. It was extensively damaged by a raging fire in the mid 17th. century.
Grevesmuehlen is often called "Kreihnsdoerp", a legend explains the reason.
Some surviving historic landmarks are the Dutch galleried windmill and the former
malt factory. The city lies close to the Baltic coast surrounded by a fine landscape with gently rolling hills, dense forests and lakes.
The area is ideal for
hiking and cycling and there are many historic points of interest such as churches and chateaus in the vicinity. Its central location on the old trade route between Wismar and Luebeck makes it an ideal base for visiting other centres in the region.
