Putbus
lies in the south of the Isle
of Ruegen at
the approach to the Deutscher Alleenstrasse - it was the great white
dream of Prince Malte of Putbus, the last in Europe to be designed in
Classicist urban style. The town with its varied history white houses is a rest and recreation resort
with a host of facilities including the 75 hectare Chateau Park and the
8 hectare deer park. The beaches on the idyllic bays near the fishing
villages with their thatched cottages are an inviting venue. The famous Chateau Park offers hours of exploration with its old trees and exotic plants. The Orangery and the bathing temple in the Friedrich-Wilhelm Baths with its 18 decorative Doric columns in Lauterbach, the Circus in the city centre and the Classicist residential theatre dating from 1821 are all well worth seeing. A visit to the island nature reserve on Vilm is also to be recommended. The "Rasende Roland" narrow gauge steam railway is in service
several times a day between Putbus and Goehren. Putbus is only a stone’s throw from the
resorts on Ruegen’s Baltic coast and the chalk fells of the Jasmund
peninsula. The network of walking and cycling paths is especially
suitable for nature lovers and family holidays. Bus and rail services
all over the island make it easy to take a holiday with lots of variety
there. |
