Boat Trips on the Warnow River
from lake Sternberger See to the Baltic Sea

Warnow
The detailed tour description:
The Warnow starts in Grebbin and flows through the administrative districts Parchim, Guestrow, Bad Doberan and flows near Rostock into the Unterwarnow. The Warnow is quite popular by water sportsmen. A number of boats are going back and forth on the river.

We suggest to start the trip at the lake Sternberger See. Starting points could be lake Burgwallsee (inland lake) near Gross Raden or the beach in Sternberg.
Before you let your boat into the water in Gross Raden, you could visit the interesting museum of Pre and Early history in Schwerin and the open-air museum on the castle peninsula. The starting point at the lake is opposite to the museum.

Let's go!

First, head down to the connection of lake Burgwallsee and lake Trenntsee. Once you get there, stay close to the right bank (on the left side is the Trenntsee with its two islands and lake Grosser Sternberger See is in front of you). Sternberg is a small interesting town with a church.

Water sportsmen can decide between two ways. If you take the left way, you'll shortly get to a weir, if you choose the right one, you'll get to the former end part of the Mildenitz. The embankment of the new river is in your way. In both cases you'll have take the boat out of the water and carry it around the obstacle. It seems to be easier to carry the boat over the embankment.

The  water of the Mildenitz is clear. You can see down to bottom and enjoy several water plants and many fish, crayfish and mussels. At the castle Sternberg, the Mildenitz flows underneath the road between Gross Raden and Sternberg.

The following part is one of the most beautiful and fascinating of the tour. The National Park Warnow and the Mildenitz valley. Once we reach the bridge for pedestrians, we should get out of the boats to explore the wild water part of the river.

After we have gone by a little island on the right side we will reach Klein Raden. It would be possible to stop at the beach of the summer camp and cottage area and to set up the tent. Klein Raden would be the starting point for the rushing traveler in order to get to Buetzow without an over night stay.
The bridge connecting Klein Raden with Eickelberg and Eickhof is almost touching the water at a normal water level. The trip goes on through wide areas of broken alders. We now have to pay attention to the driving beneath the train bridge near Eickhof. Slower travelers have an opportunity to camp near the train station in Warnow. There is a shop to add supplies.
At Eickhof the river changes its character. It has deeply cut through the peaty soil of the former glacial valley (up to 5m deep) and flows slowly through swampland meadows towards Ruehn passing Zernin.

After 4 kilometers, jetties and rowing boats indicate that you have reached the cottages of Vierburg and the restaurant. After a little snack, you can decide whether or not you want to visit the National Park lake Peetscher See.

Coming closer to Buetzow, you will see boat houses. The river splits into two parts ahead of us and we will reach an intersection. We will go on the older way of the Warnow to the sluice- gate near the mill.
Who doesn't want to camp at the resting area Buetzower See could stop here and visit the town.

The trip goes on to the old harbor and the grain elevator, passing many waterfront properties. Once  we have passed the bridge Buetzow Schwan, you might want to stay at the restaurant Kaffeekrug.

We are going downstream through a waste meadow landscape with alders. We will be going through Kambs and travel 10 more kilometers and then take a break near Vorbeck and Werle. There is a very interesting historical place: the former Slavic castle. On the opposite side of the village is a good place for a rest.

You can now decide if you want to go on to Rostock in order to see the harbor of Rostock and the mole of Warnemuende.
