| The landscape protection area is almost 20 x 20 Km
large. Meadows, forests, carp ponds and innumerable canals
characterise this landscape, considerably shaped by human hand. A unique fauna, many bird species in particular, attracts nature lovers from every corner of Europe. Lapwings, storks and cranes have their habitats in the meadow area. |

All duck species on the almost 800 hectares large carp ponds (protected area) are native. With some perseverance, you can observe the king of the skies, the sea-eagle. Transform a bicycle trip through this unique landscape into an unforgettable experience by equipping yourself with binoculars. There are many observation points, from which you can watch the animals without disturbing them. |
| Each season has
special attractions. In March, the cranes return to the northern breeding grounds. Thousands of cranes rest in the Lewitz. This proud bird can be observed very closely. From April to June, Nature stages many dramas. The mating season in the reed, resounding with numerous different kinds of singing, the defence cries of the clutches of eggs against nest robbers, the frog concert or the strange chorus of the toads, and much more, make you forget everyday life concerns for hours. |

In July and August you can observe
huge lapwing swarms. The young storks and cranes, too, feel snug in the endless meadows.
They live in groups. With binoculars, you can observe hundreds of large birds from just
one location. Bird migration is fascinating from the end of August to November. Storks and lapwings gather in tremendous swarms. |
| In November and December, the cranes travel South, the geese travel through. They can often to be observed over the whole of the cold season. The singing and dwarf swans arrive from their northerly habitats to the Lewitz. The fish ponds are emptied. On the first weekend in November you can experience the harvesting of the carps accompanied by popular festivities. |

The Waldlewitz
conveys very different, delightful impressions. Forming a central point in the open
pastures landscape, stands a closed forest area of 10 x 10 Km. This green lung must be
conquered on foot, by bicycle or by horse-drawn carriage. There are natural woodlands,
ancient solitary trees, typical alder woods and much more to be discovered. For the inquisitive, the nature teaching path or an excursion with forestry specialists is a treat. The deer stag, the row deer, the wild boar and the night-active badge, all enjoy living in this vast forest area. |

The patient observer can spot
otters and kingfishers on the Stoerkanal. In the whole Lewitz area, many bicycle paths tempt you for a trip. The most beautiful corners have picnic areas for a pause. |
