| The former residential chateau Schwerin is one of the finest historic buildings in Germany. As a result of many extensions and alterations over the centuries lots of different building styles have been combined and it was given its present form between 1843 and 1857. It was remodelled to a plan by the master builders George Adolph Demmler and Frederich August Stueler in Neo Renaissance style. The style was obviously strongly influenced by French Renaissance chateaux, especially the Chateau Chambord on the Loire. The Ducal reception rooms and living quarters are well worth seeing, as are the Throne Room, the Beletage and Silvester Gallery, the dining room , the tea room, the floral room, the Duchesses sitting room and the Dynastic Gallery. The Art Gallery Malerei in Mecklenburg with works from the 18th. to the 20th. century is also notable. In addition to its function as a cultural centre it also serves as the seat of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern regional assembly. More information in German |
