Ankershagen lies between
the county town of Waren
and the village of Penzlin, 6 km. south-east of the B 192 road and 8 km.
west of B 193 on the northernmost approach to the Müritz National Park. This Mecklenburg town was home to the world famous archaeologist and discoverer of Troy, Heinrich Schliemann (1822-1890), who spent the first eight years of his life there. The Heinrich Schliemann Museum was set up in 1980 in Schliemann’s parents’ house, a half timbered example dating from the mid - 18th. century. Visitors to the monument can learn about the life and scientific work of the archaeologist. Among the exhibits are some 40 original pieces found at Troy - pottery and bronze- and illustrations of the gold pieces from Troy and Mycenae.
There are also photos, documents and other exhibits, from Schliemann’s
childhood and youth in Mecklenburg and his family and friends. Across
the churchyard there is an interesting stone church dating from the
13th. century, in which Schliemann’s father served for nine years. His
mother was buried in the churchyard. Visitors to Ankershagen and its
surroundings can still see traces of Schliemann’s childhood haunts.
Over the years the land around the Schliemann Museum has been turned
into an idyllic gem. |
