Schloss 10

A Cistercian Monastery built in 1172 with a church. It is the best known old building in the town of Dargun, lying on the fringe of the Peene valley.

The monastery was very influential between 1172 and 1552. It was secularised around the end of the 16th. century and taken over by the lords of the House of Mecklenburg-Güstrow who converted it to a chateau over the ensuing 200 years. The former brewing house in the monastery was built in the 13th. century and is still in fairly good condition. The original four storey rendered brick building acquired an upper storey in 1585. There still remains a great deal of the original vaults inside. The remains of pointed arched windows can still be seen on the west gable front with triple returns.
