This small town on the Warnow river is surrounded by woods and lakes, offers interesting architecture and memorable cultural attractions.

Surrounded by meadows, woodland, fields, lakes and hills, the small town of Buetzow, once the capital of the diocese of Schwerin, enchants visitors and residents the same way.

But not just the inspiring scenery, the sights in town are also worth a seeing.

In1239, the bishops of Schwerin erected a castle,
which Herzog Ulrich turned into a chateau in the  Renaissance style in the middle of the 16th century. Unfortunately, very little of the circle-like castle establishments could be preserved.
Merely the bishop's chapel, which now houses a heritage museum, allows a glimpse into the past.

Another remain of the originally closed off castle grounds is the former
Kastellhaus, so called (crooked house) Krummes Haus, that now is a memorial for victims of political violence of regional importance.

Some interesting sights in downtown Buetzow are the Town Hall - an imposing piece of Tudor Gothic architecture, built in1848, many older Eaves-Houses and the Community Homeless Shelter - the oldest house in town, built in1589

A late Gothic style altar (1503), a once very popular sundial and other remarkable historic witnesses bring visitors
to the church Stiftskirche, a brick church with three naves and a 71 meter high tower overlooking the entire town.

Exploring the vicinity of Buetzow, you will find churches in picturesque scenery, built in different styles of architecture from the 12th or 13th century.

In 1997, the heritage association of Buetzow and vicinity was founded in order to collect and study exhibits which further unravel the culture and history of the region. The association especially tries to sign up younger people, hoping to increase their interest in the history of the region and the environment.

"We preserve and foster the inherited goods we love, care about and benefit from."
Hans-Dieter Nixdorf (chairman)

Buetzow also provides a well-developed traffic network. The town is close to the state capital Schwerin, has an extensive railway network and a port that used to be of economical importance and still supports traffic to the ports of Rostock and Wismar.
