The Lindenplatz (Lime Square) in Hagenow
Until the end of Communist rule, this little spot of Hagenow was called Rudolf-Breitscheid-Platz. In earlier times it was called Lindenplatz, and that’s how it is called again today. Until 1911, the square had its name with justification. Then the trees were felled and replaced with acacias, which , however, were killed by frost in the winter of 1928/29. Some years ago, new trees were planted again: maple trees! At the beginning of the eighties, the Lindenplatz increased in friendliness. Light, friendly facades demonstrate freshness and cleanliness. The lime tree in the centre of the square provides an attractive spot. Together with the stoneware flower-pots, they give life to this small boulevard. From the Lindenplatz, six roads branch into several directions.
Towards the Schwerin Road, the square is delimited by the "Doktor Guenthersche" house, whose wonderful bay window is greeting the lime tree. The name of medical director Guenther will always be connected with Hagenow. As a surgeon and country doctor, he was as well popular with the public because of his competence as he was feared by patients oversensitive to pain because of his decisive and tough manners.
Since 1990, every Wednesday and Friday the square experiences colourful hustle and bustle. It is the market, which nobody really can do without any more.
The Festival of the Old Town is the cultural highlight in Hagenow. The many visitors from near and far are enthusiastic about the Doerpschaft and the lively looking girls of the dance studio, both cultural attractions of Hagenow. A tower seemingly with a broad brimmed hat watches over all this enjoyable hustle and bustle. It belongs to the corner house at the "Hirtenstrasse" and forces the traffic coming from the station road to mark a halt.
