Between the Baltic Sea and the Salt lagoon lies the ancient fishing village of "Alt Gaarz" whose first recorded mention in was made around 1250. In 1938, this village counting today 2100 inhabitants, received town rights as well as the name of Rerik.

Rerik can look back to a long fulfilled history. Discover in the local museum a great amount of farming implements, tools and jewellery from various past centuries. The Dam, the Rerik smith’s mountain, dating from the 8^th Century a. C. in 1872, most of which was lost to the tempest. Today, the visitor can rest in a small pavilion on the mountain and enjoy the setting of the sun.

Rerik and the surrounding areas is a beautiful region, agriculturally varied and interesting from the point of view of nature. Water, steep sea-coast, woodland and fields give this region its very own, very exciting face.

Rare plant species such as the spoon plant, the marshmallow, the sea cabbage, and the pale green finger plant have a home here, which must be conserved.
