This small town is almost 750 years old and is rightly called the town of woods and lakes in the heart of Mecklenburg. The pictureque, hilly countryside with lots of woodland and some 90 lakes ranks among the finest in the land and is becoming increasingly popular as a tourist region.
The town has always been an attraction; from 1275 to 1913 it was the seat of the regional assembly of Mecklenburg and also where the Reformation was first introduced in Germany in 1549. Visitors here will notice many reminders of its colourful history. The restored Town Hall and the Market, with its historic form and fine condition are among the finest in Mecklenburg.
In the vicinity of Sternberg there are many ancient burial sites and the
old Slavic temple site near Groß Raden which attracts some 80.000 visitors each year.
Hikers and cyclists will find lots of signed routes, boat travellers will appreciate the many lakes such as the
Warnow and the especially good fishing will please the anglers.
