Formerly the seat of the Dukes of Mecklenbug-Strelitz, it lies in south of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and resulted from an edict granting civic status from Duke Adolf Friedrich III. in 1733 after his residence, Glieneke hunting lodge on Lake Zierker was completed. This was the last foundation of a baroque style town in Germany. Neustrelitz remained the ducal seat until 1918 and was the capital of the Free State of Mecklenburg-Strelitz from 1918 to 1933.
Also worth seeing are the large market place, the
chateau garden, the classicist Orangery and the memorial hall which was built for Queen Luise of Prussia, a princess born in Mecklenburg-Strelitz.
It is the gateway to the lesser lakes, close to the
Mueritz National Park and the unique lake district with lots of opportunity for activity or rest and recreation. Neustrelitz is connected by waterways through the Kammer Canal, the upper Havel-Waterway and the Rheinsberger Gewässer and is a great attraction for all kinds of water sports.
