The Wiethagen Forest and Charcoal Burning Lodge

Forest and Charcoal Burning Lodge Wiethagen Have you ever heard the word "Schausterpick" or "Plaettkohlen"t? Do you know, what the word "Kalfatern" means or for what purpose "brown tar" is used for? You know the meaning of "Fagusan" or "coal tar soap"? And what timber is charcoal for drawing made of? This and much more you can experience and smell at the Rostock-Wiethagen Forest and Charcoal Burning Lodge, located exactly between the Southern border of the Rostock Heath and the municipality of Roevenshagen.
The typical smell of the timer tar and the resinous scent of the pine forests leads to the historic tar smouldering works built in 1837 and classified as a technical monument in 1984.
It is unique in its kind in Europe. In 1984, the reconstruction of the tar ovens, then in a very bad shape, and of the buildings started, followed by the further development of the site to a public relations’ institution for nature and landscape protection, forestry and hunting, local vultures and local crafts.
Forest and Charcoal Burning Lodge Wiethagen
In 1991, the "Association of the Friends and Supporters of the Rostock-Wiethagen Forest and Charcoal Burning Lodge" was founded, which in co-operation with the many sponsors forms the basis of the lodge. The lodge is owned by the Hanseatic City of Rostock. In the course of the years, the opportunities has become ever more various and attractive. Meanwhile, apart from the visits by tourists, school classes and senior groups all year round, the Forest and Charcoal Burning Lodge has been integrated into EXPO 2000 Hanover as part of the external project ("green routes").
